The claimTen open-source repos, 446,694 stars between them, doing work you'd expect to pay for: Stirling-PDF→Acrobat, Immich→Google Photos, Upscayl→Topaz, Whisper→Otter, LocalSend→AirDrop, plus five newer agent-tooling picks. Most run entirely on your own machine; costs nothing but the time to install.
We added the stars ourselves: the claimed total was accurate at posting (455K by the time we checked — they grew). All ten repos exist, and the headline five are exactly the tools the self-hosting community already swears by: Stirling-PDF (~89K stars), Immich (~110K), Upscayl (~48K), Whisper (~107K), LocalSend (~88K). These are the real deal. The honest footnotes: 'Whisper replaces Otter' compares a model to a product — Otter's meeting bot, speaker labels, and summaries need a wrapper app around Whisper; Immich makes you the sysadmin of your family's photo library (always-on box, backups, docker); and the five agent-tooling picks quietly sit on top of a paid Claude plan. 'Free' means you pay in setup time and a machine that stays on. As repo lists go, this is the good stuff.
