REAL "The $0 stack: ten repos, 446,694 stars, doing work you'd pay for" — the math checks out, and so do the tools TikTok · Aug 12, 2026

The claimTen open-source repos, 446,694 stars between them, doing work you'd expect to pay for: Stirling-PDF→Acrobat, Immich→Google Photos, Upscayl→Topaz, Whisper→Otter, LocalSend→AirDrop, plus five newer agent-tooling picks. Most run entirely on your own machine; costs nothing but the time to install.

We added the stars ourselves: the claimed total was accurate at posting (455K by the time we checked — they grew). All ten repos exist, and the headline five are exactly the tools the self-hosting community already swears by: Stirling-PDF (~89K stars), Immich (~110K), Upscayl (~48K), Whisper (~107K), LocalSend (~88K). These are the real deal. The honest footnotes: 'Whisper replaces Otter' compares a model to a product — Otter's meeting bot, speaker labels, and summaries need a wrapper app around Whisper; Immich makes you the sysadmin of your family's photo library (always-on box, backups, docker); and the five agent-tooling picks quietly sit on top of a paid Claude plan. 'Free' means you pay in setup time and a machine that stays on. As repo lists go, this is the good stuff.

What holds up

  • Star math verified by hand: claimed 446,694 was accurate at posting date
  • The big five are the community-consensus best-in-class replacements, all actively maintained
  • LocalSend and Upscayl are true one-click installs — 'anyone' difficulty
  • Small-repo picks checked for star-farming signals: fork/issue ratios look organic

What doesn't

  • Whisper is a transcription model, not an Otter replacement out of the box — no meeting bot, no diarization, no summaries without a wrapper
  • Immich's real cost: a $100–300 always-on box + docker + backup discipline — cheaper to pay Google $2/mo if you won't run a server
  • Two of the five 'agent tooling' picks are hobby-stage (280 and 478 stars) — not stack material yet
  • The agent picks require a paid Claude plan — the '$0 stack' has a $20–200/mo floor for that half

The catch

Only the definition of free. Free software, yes; free operation, no — the currency is setup weekends, an always-on machine, and (for the agent half) an AI subscription. Priced honestly, the big five are still a bargain.

How to actually do it

  • Today, zero skill: LocalSend (AirDrop everywhere) and Upscayl (one-click upscales) — genuinely install-and-go
  • This weekend, some skill: Stirling-PDF via one Docker command — covers most Acrobat jobs
  • Only if you'll commit: Immich replaces Google Photos beautifully AND makes you responsible for the backups — mini-PC or NAS required
  • Transcription: use a Whisper wrapper app (MacWhisper, Vibe) to get the Otter experience, not raw Whisper
  • Skip the sub-500-star picks until they grow up — watchlist, not stack

The install order that pays off immediately.

Effort
Two are instant; the self-hosted ones are a weekend each
Cost
$0 software + a $100–300 always-on box for Immich + $2/mo to Google remains the honest lazy option
Stack
LocalSend + Upscayl + Stirling-PDF first; Immich for the committed
