The claimFifteen tools, top-tier priced at $747 a month, but $569 of that can be replaced by free alternatives that do the same job — Notion→Obsidian, Calendly→Cal.com, Dropbox→Nextcloud, Zapier→n8n, Miro→Excalidraw, Otter→Granola, Airtable→Baserow, Typeform→Google Forms, Mixpanel→PostHog, 1Password→Bitwarden, Intercom→Chatwoot.
We did the math the post didn't: the caption promises 15 tools totaling $747, then lists 11 pairs that sum to exactly $569 — four tools and $178 simply never appear. Of the 11 pairs, roughly 9 are genuine and some are excellent (Bitwarden, Cal.com, Excalidraw, PostHog, Google Forms — we run our own scheduling on Cal.com). Two are broken: Granola is neither open source nor free in any real sense (Business is $14/user/mo, the free tier caps your note history), and Mixpanel doesn't even have a $99 tier anymore — it went usage-based with a generous free tier, which deflates its own 'replacement.' Prices also silently mix monthly and annual billing to inflate the total.
What holds up
- 9 of 11 pairs are legitimate swaps; Bitwarden, Cal.com, Excalidraw, PostHog, and Google Forms are genuinely strong free replacements
- Most quoted prices check out at some tier: Notion Business $20, Otter Business $30, Intercom Expert $139
- n8n's free self-hosted Community edition genuinely covers your own commercial automations
What doesn't
- The headline math fails its own list: 11 pairs shown, $569 exactly — the '15 tools / $747' framing is padding
- The Granola pair is flat wrong — it's a paid product with a capped free tier, not a free Otter replacement
- Mixpanel's quoted $99 tier no longer exists — it's usage-based with 1M free events
- Nextcloud, n8n, Baserow, and Chatwoot 'free' means self-hosted: a $5–20/mo VPS plus you becoming your own IT department
- Excalidraw replaces a whiteboard canvas, not Miro's team features; Google Forms replaces data collection, not Typeform's branded UX
The catch
'Free' in these lists means free software, not free operation. The honest saving for a solo operator is real — probably $300–500/mo if you're currently paying top-tier for everything — but you pay for it in hosting dollars and setup weekends, and you were probably never paying top-tier for all fifteen anyway.
How to actually do it
- Do today, zero pain: 1Password→Bitwarden, Calendly→Cal.com, Miro→Excalidraw (for canvas work), Typeform→Google Forms
- Do if you're actually paying for analytics: PostHog's free tier — or check Mixpanel's own free tier first; many teams owe $0 on either
- Transcription: the honest free-ish move is Whisper (open source, local), not Granola
- Self-host n8n/Baserow/Chatwoot only if you enjoy being your own sysadmin — otherwise the subscription IS the cheaper option once your time has a price
- Audit rule: price your CURRENT tier, not the top tier — most 'save $569' math starts by assuming you overpay
