PARTLY "5 open-source AI trading agent repos most people are sleeping on" — honest caption, undisclosed conflict: the poster sells an AI trading terminal TikTok · Aug 12, 2026

The claim5 open-source AI trading agent repos across crypto, stocks, and prediction markets — 'the real ones where an LLM actually reasons.' The caption itself concedes the biggest one can't place trades by design, and says to run everything in paper-trading mode first.

By TikTok standards this caption is honest — it tells you the flagship can't trade and to paper-trade first, which is more candor than the genre ever shows. The repos are real: TradingAgents (~98K stars) and ai-hedge-fund (~63K) are the two giants, and ai-hedge-fund's README says in bold that it's educational and doesn't place trades. But the receipts get worse the closer you look: TradingAgents' own community caught its backtests leaking future data (a 'clear look-ahead bias' issue — real-time info retrieved during historical simulation), one listed repo is a general agent framework rather than a trading agent, one is Microsoft research tooling, and one is an 87-star repo idle since April. No verified live profits exist for any of the five. And the flag that matters most: the poster's own site sells an AI crypto-perps trading terminal — a trading-repos post from that seller is top-of-funnel, and the caption doesn't say so.

What holds up

  • All 5 repos exist; TradingAgents (~98K) and ai-hedge-fund (~63K) are heavyweight and real
  • ai-hedge-fund's own disclaimer is honorable: educational only, deliberately cannot trade
  • The caption's paper-trade-first advice is correct and creditable
  • LLM-agents-reasoning-about-markets is a real research direction (TradingAgents has an arXiv paper)

What doesn't

  • Undisclosed conflict: the poster sells his own AI crypto-perps trading terminal while posting trading-repo roundups
  • TradingAgents' headline backtests were caught leaking future data by its own community — and LLM backtests carry an unfixable leak besides: the model's training data already contains the era's outcomes
  • One pick is idle since April at 87 stars; two others aren't trading agents at all
  • Multi-agent analysis burns $5–20/day in API calls per handful of tickers — you pay real money to run the simulation whether or not it ever earns
  • Zero verified live profits anywhere in the ecosystem — if reasoning-LLM trading reliably beat the market, it wouldn't be free on TikTok

The catch

A backtest that peeked at the future is a résumé with a fake job on it — and the model's own training data makes some peeking unavoidable. Treat every LLM-trading backtest as marketing until it survives months of live paper-trading you ran yourself. Then remember the industry receipt from our #089: four of six frontier models lost real money the moment the trades were real.

How to actually do it

  • Clone ai-hedge-fund or TradingAgents and run paper mode with a cheap model — genuinely a great course in multi-agent reasoning
  • Paper-trade any strategy through MONTHS and different market regimes before a dollar moves
  • Size anything experimental at money you can fully lose — that's the position size for 'my bot has a thesis'
  • Evidence bar: a strategy whose only proof is its own backtest hasn't met it
  • When a trading-content creator also sells a trading product, read the roundup as the top of their funnel — because it is

The education is real and free — here's how to take it without paying tuition to the market.

Effort
A weekend to run paper mode; months of it before the results mean anything
Cost
$5–20/day in API calls to run seriously — the simulation bills you even when the market doesn't
Stack
ai-hedge-fund (paper) + a cheap model + a calendar reminder to still be paper-trading in 90 days
Confidence
High
