PARTLY "Claude Cowork has access to your computer and does the work for you" — half right, and the wrong half TikTok · Aug 12, 2026

The claimClaude Cowork is a Claude that has access to your computer and does the work for you. 9 out of 10 people write it off as a smarter chatbot — it's not.

Cowork is real — Anthropic launched it in January 2026 as 'Claude Code without the code,' built for non-technical people, and it genuinely executes multi-step work: spreadsheets with formulas, documents, browser tasks, scheduled jobs. We run our whole shop on this product family, so we'll vouch for the direction. But 'has access to your computer' gets the key detail backwards: Cowork is folder-scoped and permission-gated by design. It sees the folders you hand it, follows the network rules you set, and asks before anything is permanently deleted. The post erases the exact safety architecture that makes the product handable to a business. And '9 out of 10 people' is an invented stat — nobody measured that.

What holds up

  • Claude Cowork is a real Anthropic product (launched Jan 2026), expanded to web and mobile in July 2026
  • It does execute real multi-step work autonomously — the 'more than a chatbot' framing is fair
  • Included in paid Claude plans from Pro ($20/mo) up — tiers differ by usage, not features

What doesn't

  • "Access to your computer" overstates a deliberately sandboxed, folder-scoped design — the safety feature is reported as if it were an omission
  • "9 out of 10 people" cites nothing because there is nothing to cite
  • Faceless page; the CTA is engagement bait, not information

The catch

The oversell here is subtle: making the product sound MORE powerful than it is also makes it sound less safe than it is. The real pitch — you point it at a folder, it does the work in that folder, and it asks before deleting — is better for an actual business owner than the sci-fi version, and it's the true one.

We didn't have to build the test — this audit itself, the SMS line, the invoices, and the fleet of client installs all run on Claude doing real work on real computers, folder-scoped, every day. The claim's honest version is our daily operation.
