PARTLY TRUE "Claude + OpenBB = a $25,000 Bloomberg terminal, completely free" — real tool, wrong equivalence
The claimInstall OpenBB, connect it to Claude, ask about any stock, crypto, or filing — Claude pulls live data from 50+ sources and reads it back like a finance analyst. A $25,000 Bloomberg terminal, completely free. Comment "BLOOM" for the link.
OpenBB is real, genuinely open-source, and connecting it to Claude via MCP is a legitimately great research setup — the demo works as shown. The equivalence is the stretch: Bloomberg's ~$25–30k seat buys real-time exchange feeds, fixed-income depth, and the terminal chat network none of which OpenBB replicates. And 'free' has an asterisk — OpenBB's core is free, but many of the '50+ sources' are API keys you bring, several of them paid. It's a free Bloomberg the way a home gym is a free personal trainer.
What holds up
- OpenBB verified: open-source financial platform, actively maintained, MCP integration real
- The workflow shown (ask Claude → query OpenBB → analyst-style readback) works today
- Bloomberg seat pricing ~$25–30k/yr — the anchor number is fair
What doesn't
- Real-time exchange-grade data is NOT free — free tiers are delayed/limited; serious feeds cost money
- '50+ sources' = bring-your-own API keys, several paid (Polygon, FMP, etc.)
- No IB chat, no fixed-income desk tooling, no compliance layer — the parts pros actually pay Bloomberg for
- Comment-gate for a link that's just github.com/OpenBB-finance
The catch
For a solo investor or analyst, OpenBB + Claude genuinely covers the research slice of a terminal — that's a real win worth having. Calling it a Bloomberg replacement is how you disappoint yourself in week two. It replaces the $0-to-$200/mo tier of tools, not the $25k one.
How to actually do it
- Install: pip install openbb (Python 3.10+), or use OpenBB's hosted workspace
- Connect the OpenBB MCP server to Claude Desktop/Code per their docs — then ask for a ticker rundown to smoke-test
- Add free-tier API keys first (yfinance works keyless); pay for a data source only when a specific gap bites
- Reminder that matters here: nothing this produces is investment advice — it's a research tool, and we don't play advisor
- Effort
- 30–60 min to a working Claude-driven research desk
- Cost
- $0 core + your existing Claude sub; optional paid data feeds later
- Stack
- OpenBB + OpenBB MCP + Claude; yfinance/free keys to start
- Confidence
- High
