The claimOpen-source tools are getting seriously good — in many cases they do the same jobs people pay monthly subscriptions for, across AI, automation, coding, scraping, databases, and productivity. This list of 10 GitHub projects proves it. (None of the 10 are named in the caption.)
The premise is verifiably true as a category — this audit has confirmed a dozen instances of it (Stirling-PDF vs Acrobat, n8n vs Zapier, PostHog vs Mixpanel, Baserow vs Airtable, Chatwoot vs Intercom). But 'these 10 projects' can't be receipt-checked because the caption names zero of them. Un-nameable tools are un-gradeable tools, and the vagueness is the retention mechanic: you must swipe, save, and follow. Compare entry #070, which at least named its list and could be held to it. The control/customization/lock-in argument is directionally fair and omits the same cost every time: self-hosting means you become the sysadmin.
What holds up
- The open-source-replaces-subscriptions trend is real and accelerating — confirmed repeatedly across this audit
- The claimed categories (automation, analytics, databases, support) all have genuine open-source leaders
What doesn't
- Zero named tools = zero accountability — the whole payload is hidden in the slides
- "Follow me for more useful AI tools" is the CTA; the vagueness IS the product
- "Less dependence on platforms" is true only after you've successfully become your own IT department
The catch
A true premise is doing the credibility work for an uncheckable list. Save the premise, skip the mystery.

- Every one has a public repo — read the issues tab before installing; it's the honest review section
- Budget a VPS ($5–20/mo) or an always-on machine, plus real setup time per tool
- Swap one tool at a time; the graveyard of 'we self-hosted everything in a weekend' is large
- Rule: never install from a slideshow — install from a repo you've actually looked at
A vetted, NAMED list in the same categories — every one inspectable before you install it.
