HOLDS UP "Sorry, Claude is not designing this" — a designer's counter-claim to the AI-builds-everything genre Other · Aug 3, 2026

The claimThat stunning animated site everyone credits to AI? Claude can build it — but it isn't designing it. You still need a designer to make it work.

Refreshing entry in the log: a claim pointed AGAINST the hype, from someone with skin in the game. A designer shows a high-end animated product site and says the quiet part: the model can generate the code, but the taste — hierarchy, motion timing, restraint, the decisions that make it feel expensive — came from a human. This matches what our own audits keep finding from the other direction: the tools genuinely build, and the differentiator that survives is direction and judgment. It's light on specifics and it's also self-promotion for design services, but nothing claimed is false.

What holds up

  • Consistent with every real 'AI built this' case we've audited: generation is real, art direction is human
  • The poster is a working designer showing work, not selling a course or gating a guide
  • No fake numbers, no manufactured urgency, no funnel tricks — a unicorn in this feed

What doesn't

  • It's still marketing — the takeaway conveniently equals 'hire a designer'
  • No process shown: a before/after of the AI's raw output vs. the directed result would have proven the point instead of asserting it

The catch

None worth the name. The only thing to remember is that 'AI can't do X' claims age fast — what stays true is that someone has to know what good looks like.

How to actually do it

  • Use AI to build; budget human taste for what customers actually see — that's where trust is won
  • When you see a jaw-dropping 'AI made this' demo, ask what the prompt-giver already knew about design
  • If you can't afford a designer, steal structure from the best sites in your industry and let AI implement THAT

Logged as honest counter-programming; it's the same lesson our Built-It entries keep teaching.
